[Repoter's View]Free Meals Will Improve the Quality of Education
Á¦ 115 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2010.04.15

Most people have read 'The Little Match Seller' written by Hans Christian Andersen. Now, there are many little match sellers being ostracized by people in our society.

Nowadays, the press is talking about providing meal services for free for students. The opposition party argues that free meal service should be provided to all students from elementary to middle school students, but the government and the ruling party argue that it should be provided only to students whose parents don't have enough money. The party said, "It is a waste of the school's budget that school lunches are offered to students from wealthy families for free. We don't have enough money to offer school meals to all students."

However, the argument is very weak. The high cost can't be the reason for objecting to providing free school meals. The city of Seoul has used about 8 trillion won for 4 years in the projects 'Design Seoul¡® and 'Han River Renewal Project' to decorate the urban environment. It will only cost about 1.8 trillion won to offer free meals for elementary and middle school students from all over the country. Jeonllabuk-do prepared the highest budget to offer free meals to students, but the city's grade of reliance ratio of local finance was at the lower end.

It is specified in the constitution that 'Compulsory education is for free.' Now, all students from elementary to middle school are educated for free. The students don't need to pay for textbooks or school fees. A school lunch is also a cost to educate students. According to the constitution concerning free education, free meals should be offered to students.

Children have the right to be treated without discrimination. According to their parents economic ability, deciding whether children can eat lunch or not is cruel. The roles of schools are not only to teach the children to adjust to society but also to protect the children.

We can improve the quality of education through free meals. Also, in the long term, the main beneficiaries will not be the students, but the country. Well-educated children will give large profits to our country. The large profits will be larger than the present budgets. Therefore, the country is responsible for school lunches.
