From July 1 to 26, the Liberal Education Center and the Student Council at CBNU held a Liberal Arts Course Contest called “What Kind of Liberal arts course Should We Create?” This contest, which began in 2022 and is now for the third year, aims to develop and introduce new liberal arts courses based on ideas proposed by students about the subjects they want to learn in college. The goal is to create a student-centered curriculum.

  In the 2022, 1st Liberal Arts Course Contest, “A New World of Possibilities: Metaverse” and 11 other teams were selected. In the 2023, 2nd Liberal Arts Course Contest, “Global Citizenship Education” and 5 other teams were chosen. As a result, new liberal arts courses like “Our Culture: The Strange and Fantastic,” “Superstition and Science,” “Acting and Directing,” “Introduction to Digital Photography,” “Photoshop Basics and Applications,” and “K-Beauty Science” were created and offered.

  This year, at the 3rd Liberal Arts Course Contest, 12 teams were selected as winners. The grand prize was awarded to the team “Public Health in Our Daily Lives.” The Excellence Awards went to “Truth and Lies in the Digital Age,” “The First Step in Psychological Counseling,” along with three other works that received the Outstanding Award. Additionally, six entries were selected for the Encouragement Award. The 2024 awards ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 6.

  The awards for the contest are as follows: One team will receive the Grand Prize, which includes the Presidentʼs Award and 1,000,000 KRW. Two teams will get the First Prize, which includes the Director of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Education Award and 700,000 KRW. Three teams will receive the Second Prize, which includes the Directorʼs Award and 400,000 KRW. Finally, six teams will get the Encouragement Prize, which includes the Directorʼs Award and 200,000 KRW. The judging criteria for the Liberal Arts Course Contest include specificity, relevance, uniqueness, feasibility, and originality.

  The person in charge at the The Office of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Education said, “The courses selected in this 3rd Liberal Arts Course Contest, like those from the past two years, will be included in the liberal arts course after conducting a survey on the demand from departments that wish to offer these new courses. Besides the Liberal Arts Course Contest, the Office of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Education is also planning student participation activities such as contests for student essays on liberal arts courses. These efforts aim to increase studentsʼ interest and reflect their learning needs, ensuring a student-centered liberal arts curriculum.”
