If you have attended school in Korea, it might be familiar to you that every student should write their own future dream on a paper at the beginning of every semester. I only wrote the words ¡®civil servant¡¯ on the paper until I was 17 years old, and I also said it to anyone who has asked me about my future dream.
There was no special reason that I wanted to be a civil servant. Many adults told me, ¡°The civil servant is the best job.¡± It was a part of why I chose that profession, but most of all, if I become a civil servant, I would not need to worry about being kicked out unless I quit the job first. My parents did not dissuade me from wanting to become a civil servant. Rather, they were glad and liked that their daughter wanted to be a civil servant.
One day, I asked myself if I really wanted to become a civil servant. At that time, it was in March of my 2nd year in high school. I could not write the same words on the paper as I used to write about my future dream. Strangely enough, I wondered about all of my future plans on that day.
After that day, what I did was constantly throw questions at myself about what activities I like to do and what I can do well. This deliberation was not long. After less than one week, I realized that I loved to help people. Saying that I like it is not strong enough; the word ¡®love¡¯ is crucial there. Now, when I think about that day, it was a huge discovery to know what I like to do. This is because there are many university students who do not know what they like and what they can do well. I realized at the age of 18 that helping someone and hearing a word of thanks from that person make me the happiest person in the world.
Since then, I have looked at one of many jobs that can help people. Entering as a worker in an international organization like the UN became my goal and future dream. The difference between having a clear dream or not seems to be enormous and tremendous. For my goal, I have to run nonstop for 21 years, and I still have to run forward further. Even if I try hard for my dream, it seems so far from me, so I am confused about whether this way is right because I cannot predict the future at all. However, if someone asks me, ¡°Why do you want to be a worker in an international organization?¡± I can say proudly, ¡°Because I am glad when I help you.¡±
