[The Social Effects of Peter Pan Syndrome]Peter Pan Syndrome Is a Flight from Reality
제 109 호    발행일 : 2009.06.01

We live in a dog-eat-dog society that is becoming harsher. Life for adults requires important responsibilities as a cost of the freedom they have. While living their lives, adults easily forget the heart of a child. Recently, Korea has rapidly grown socially, but Korea is now at a crisis economically. This situation is similar to the United States in the 1970’s. Consider the fact that at that time in America, there was an increase in “Peter Pan syndrome” patients, and it is not a surprise that there is an increase in Peter Pan syndrome patients these days in Korea.
People become independent of their parents when they grow up and become adults. It is a natural principle. However, the phenomenon of adults who graduate university who still try to depend on their parents is increasing, because they have trouble getting a job due to the poor economy. This is one of the Peter Pan syndrome’s phenomena. The affected are only chasing the rest of their childhood ignoring their social responsibilities.
Peter Pan syndrome patients can’t adapt to the changing society and can’t get along well. The problem is that these phenomena usually happen to those in their 20’s and 30’s who should be a major pillar of society. Peter Pan syndrome patients are languid and humble themselves. It keeps them from performing their work. Spread of this syndrome can cause a decrease in social productivity, and it is a waste of useful resources in society.
In the view of psychiatry, Peter Pan syndrome is a “dependent personality disorder.” Therefore, if they lose their object of dependence, they feel anger. When this anger is directed inward, depression can be caused. However, if the anger is directed outward, an aggression toward others appears. It is also a problem in that the above two phenomena can cause secondary social problems.
Everyone wants a stable and comfortable life. However, if you are adults, you have to face responsibility, rather than ignore it. Society is somewhat responsible for causing the Peter Pan syndrome. However, an individual’s will is more responsible for this syndrome.
