This academic year, Chungbuk National University(CBNU) reduced tuition by 5.3%. In terms of money, an average of 120,000 won was cut in the total amount of each semester's tuition. The average tuition reduction ratio(ratio of reduced tuition) of 10 local major national universities was 5.35%, so CBNU’s tuition reduction ratio is similar to the averag. | |

Last year, the whole country was in an uproar over 'half-price tuition' demonstrations. Many people are divided into pros and cons. The government made the National Scholarship(NS) as an alternative to half-price tuition. The total amount of money supporting higher education is approximately 1.8 trillion won through the NS by the government. The NS combined the Future Dream scholarship, the Hope Dream scholarship and the Superiority Dream scholarship. The NS is divided into two categories, type 1 and type 2. The minimum G.P.A to receive the NS is above 3.0 point. Type 1 is offered to students from the bottom 5 income groups(roughly 29 million won a year). Type 2 is also awarded to the students from the bottom 9 income groups(roughly 54 million won a year). According to Korea Student Aid Foundation(KOSAF), students from the bottom 9 income groups can receive about on average 25% discounted tuition. However, students' responses to this change have been unreceptive. | |

In the original trial of a litigation asking for refunds from the Dues for School Supporting Organization(DSSO), the court ruled that the universities must give ten-thousand won per a person to all students who participated in it on January 1st. 4,219 students who attend eight national or public universities, such as Seoul, Pusan and Kyungpook National University, filed the litigation against each school's supporting association. If the universities lose the final decision, they must give students back over 13 trillion won that the DSSO has collected over ten years. After this news spread, many students in Chungbuk National University(CBNU) were insisting that they should participate in a secondary litigation. | |

Singer Hong Gyeongmin received his honorary diploma from CBNU
CBNU granted singer Hong Gyeongmin an honorary Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Diplomacy at the 2011 graduation ceremony which was held on the 23rd of last month. Mr. Hong entered the department in 1995. However, he had to give up his studies because he went into the entertainment business as a singer when he was a sophomore. He has kept in touch with alumni, professors and students and actively participated in school events such as the Gaesin Festival even while having a heavy schedule in the entertainment business. | |

On February 6, Chungcheongbuk-do and the National Folk Museum held a declaration ceremony of ‘The 2012 Chungbuk Folk Culture Year(2012CFCY)’ in the Cheongju Culture ＆ Arts Center. The declaration ceremony had four events, which were a standing event, an event before the official ceremony, an official ceremony and an event afterwards. | |

Last year, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology(MEST) designated Chungbuk National University(CBNU) as a university which should be restructured along with Kangwon National University, Kunsan University, and Busan University of Education. MEST is forcing CBNU to reform its structure, such as the direct election system of the university president and the reduction or merge of departments, by applying criteria such as employment rates and recruitment rates of students which are not appropriate for local national universities.
The purpose of MEST could be to force CBNU to be ready for incorporating. Because of MEST’s coercion and unilateral push, the honor and pride of CBNU are exhaustively hurt. The fatal blow did not affect just CBNU. Freshmen who will enter CBNU and enrolled students lost their pride of our school a bit. | |
