[Factors That Cause Depression]Prejudice Makes Depression Worse
Á¦ 108 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2009.05.06
As the issue of depression is becoming a bigger social problem, the interest in depression is becoming more prevalent. What are the reasons for depression?
There are many ways to categorize the reasons for depression. In general, the reasons can be classified into three types. The first reason is a biological factor. In the biological factor, the lack or discord of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine in the brain can cause depression. Depression also can be caused when the biorhythm is disturbed. It is because melatonin, which makes people depressed, is created excessively. Melatonin is created during the spring and autumn more than in other seasons, so people feel depressed more easily.
The second reason is a psychological factor. People meet and part from other people during their lives. In the relationships between people, they depend on other people and suffer from an inferiority complex. Therefore, some people can lose their self-esteem, which causes depression.
The last reason is a sociological factor. The sociological factor affects the increase of depression more than the other factors. As the financial situation gets worse, the number of people who feel uneasy is increasing. Furthermore, fear of unemployment because of restructuring, various social problems, and accidents make people nervous. Those also can cause depression.
However, those three factors are just some factors of depression, not the reason for an increase in suicide. The increase in suicide is caused by the prejudice of depressed people. People usually do not go to hospital when they feel they might plummet into depression. It is because there is a social prejudice that depression is a mental disease. Moreover, people usually hide their depression because they don¡¯t want to be seen as a weak person by other people.
Whatever the disease is, people can recover well if they are treated early. However, if people don¡¯t get treatment, the disease grows and gets worse. Certainly, depression is not an incurable disease. If people throw away their prejudice about depression, more people will seek treatment.
