[David column] That¡¯s Very Punny!
Á¦ 143 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2013.10.07

Learning language jokes can really help you to improve your English. One kind of joke in English is called a ¡°pun¡±.  A pun is when you use the sounds and different meanings of words to make a joke. They can be a good way to practice pronunciation and learn some humor at the same time!  Today, I¡¯d like to share with you some of my favorite puns.  Maybe you¡¯ll laugh!
Here¡¯s a good one:  ¡°My friend got hit in the head with a can of soda. He was lucky it was a soft drink.¡±  Usually ¡°soft drink¡± means a bubbly drink, like coke.  But in this case, the joke is that the drink was not hard, it was soft.  The joke plays with the two meanings of the word.  Do you get it?
When we used to drive on the highway together, my grandfather used to ask us, ¡°Hey, what¡¯s that in the road ahead?¡±.  He pronounced it like this though: ¡°What¡¯s that in the road – A HEAD?¡±  So we would laugh and imagine that ahead of us in the road there was a head.  This plays with the two possible meanings of ¡°ahead¡± and ¡°a head¡±, meaning in front of me, and the top part of a person¡¯s body with the face and hair.
The last pun comes from a very famous movie called ¡°Pulp Fiction¡±.  It goes like this: Three tomatoes are walking down the street, a dad tomato, a mom tomato, and a little baby tomato. The baby tomato is walking too slowly behind his parents.  The dad tomato gets mad, goes over to baby tomato and squeezes him until juice comes out of him.  Then he says, ¡°Hey, catch up!¡±  The joke plays with the sound of the words ¡°catch up¡± (move faster up here) and ¡°ketchup¡± which is a sauce made from tomatoes.
If you¡¯d like to learn more puns, you can check out this website. http://www.punoftheday.com/cgi-bin/disppuns.pl?ord=F.  Remember, even if you don¡¯t think they are too funny, they can help you a lot with your English!
