A Woman Who Expresses Her Travels in Writing, Kwon Da-hyun
Á¦ 130 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2012.03.02

She is telling about her travels

Where did you travel this winter vacation? University students can travel to romantic places

throughout summer or winter vacation. Have you ever felt like having an occupation related to travel on your trip? CBNU reporters interviewed ¡®Kwon Da- hyun', a travel writer. Kwon Da hyun wrote a book titled ¡®Rail Ro Giycharo¡¯. The book provides tips for tourists.

How did Kwon Da-hyun become a travel writer?

My birthplace is Gangneung. When I was young, my pleasure was getting out of Gangneung. To get out of Gangneung, first of all, I saved up all my pocket money. And with the money, I often traveled to Seoul. Seoul was very different from Gangneung. Thus, I deeply fell in love with Seoul's charm. After that, I liked to wander from place to place.

After graduation, I became a reporter. After working for two years, However, I was tired of the

repetitive competition in coverage and news writing. Thus, I fell into monotony. To get out of the

boredom and to take pleasure in life, I quit my job as a reporter and decided to travel into the small towns of England.

In England, I enjoyed wandering from street to street. When I was tired, I went into a cafe and

looked out of the windows with a cup of coffee. In people¡¯s daily lives, I could feel England¡¯s

atmosphere was different from Korea¡¯s.

Through my travels, I discovered the great novelty factors of travel and fell in love with travel itself. In addition, I suddenly thought that there are good places for tourists in Korea. This thinking was the starting point for my book, Rail Ro Giycharo.

Yeongwol as the most impressive region

I have a habit of studying the history of travel destinations. Thanks to my habit, Yeongwol has

remained as the most impressive region to me. Before I traveled to Yeongwol, I had discovered that Danjong, who was a king in the Joseon Dynasty, was exiled to Cheongryeompo and finally killed by king Sejo, who was his uncle, in Cheongryeompo. To travel to Cheongryeompo, the first thing I had to do was to take a ferry. There were not many people coming and going in Cheongryeompo. Danjong had to live in such a place by himself. Thus, I felt Danjong¡¯s loneliness when looking around Cheongryeompo. I imagined a scene when a child had to leave his mother and live by himself. It broke my heart. That¡¯s why I was impressed with Yeongwol. If I had not known that Yeongwol was Danjong¡¯s banishment place, Yeongwol would have been nothing more than one of the fast-paced travel destinations to me. A better understanding about history of travel destinations boosts the degree of pleasure that you can gain on your trip. Therefore, I recommend that university students study the history of their travel destinations in advance.

Kwon Da hyuns' view of nature as a travel writer

When I witness environmental destruction on my trips, I am very upset. I went to the Seomjin River with camera crews in order to film a natural scene of the Seomjin River. Since I was so impressed with the natural scene of the Seomjin River, I was delighted with an expectation that I would be able to see the natural scene of the Seomjin River again.

As soon as we arrived at the Seomjin River, we met the tourism authority staff. They asked us to film a garden which they had made near the Seomjin River. However, we had no choice but to show our surprise after seeing the garden because colorful roses were planted in the garden. The scene of roses blooming near the Seomjin River was very unnatural. In addition, the roses were an imported species, so it was contrast with the folksy scene of the Seomjin River. I guessed the reason that the staff had planted the roses near the Seomjin River was to meet the tastes of people of all ages. However, as a travel writer, I couldn¡¯t hide my disappointment about the unnatural scene. I thought that nature should be observed in its true form.

Her difficult time as a travel writer

As a hobby, travel wasn¡¯t hard for me. However, I realized that a hobby is different from an
occupation.

To write the book, I traveled all over the country. Because I felt pressured to meet the deadlines, I was uncomfortable on my trips. Thus, I couldn¡¯t enjoy traveling completely. In addition, I was controled by a publishing company on my trip. The publishing company instructed me to take pictures from fixed angles and even decided my traveling routes. Of course, I don¡¯t mean to say that the publishing company is bad. Ordinary workers have to finish their tasks in a given time. It is true of travel writer. In reality, both publishing company and I had no time because of the deadlines. In conclusion, it was very hard when I had to consider the traveling as a kind of task under the occupational limitation.

For university students

I gave a lecture to students about my travels at one university. The students seemed to concentrate on my lecture. I still remember the students¡¯ twinkling eyes. Also, I learned how much students were interested in traveling. Because traveling allows the students to widen their mental vision, I recommend taking trips.

Meanwhile, I want the students to observe two things.

First, I think that students do not have to plan a tight schedule. They often try to travel to as many places as possible because they can freely get on a train at only 54,700won for 7 days. However, I hope that they choose some places to travel to because they may not feel joy with too tight schedule. Therefore, I recommend students to decide where to travel totally based on their interests. An acquaintance was really interested in Yi Sun-shin, who was an admiral in the Joseon Dynasty. Thus, his destinations were all related to Yi Sun-shin. There was also a person who believed in Catholicism, who often traveled to religious places.

Second, I hope that the students practice good manners on their trips. Some local residents often have to experience uncomfortable situations because they live in tourist attractions. I heard a story where some students made much noise in a village famous for murals at midnight. I¡¯m still curious why they went to that village at midnight.

Take enjoyable trips without disturbing others!
