[Desk Column] Do you remember the way to talk face-to-face?
Á¦ 138 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2013.03.01

The writing with the title ¡®A wrecked world by smart phones¡¯ has struck the eye of many people online these days. The writing illustrates two photographs of the U.S. President Obama and his family in different two years. They are watching a sports game in the picture of 2009. However, they are all looking at their smart phones in the picture of 2013. This change has occurred in just 4 years.
A smart phone is portable equipment that allows people to do what was done with a computer before. We can take photos, shoot videos, send e-mails and surf the internet using a smartphone. In addition, smart phones have a merit that people can install programs called applications (apps) they need, which is different from feature phones where people could use only fixed functions.
Smart phones started to become widespread from October, 2010 in Korea. They have attracted many people in only two years. It is difficult to find people who are not holding smart phones in the street now. Furthermore, smart phones changed our society profoundly. The biggest change is that the conversations among people have been disappearing.
People play with smart phones that have a lot of interesting functions rather than talking with other people when they have spare time. A smart phone has functions as numerous as the number of apps. It was estimated that the Google play store had 70 million apps in 2010. Thus, people never get tired of the smart phones because they can do so many things with their smart phones.
It is true that conversation has been disappearing because of the smart phones, but the means of communication is also changing, because of smart phones, from voice to the smart phone apps. Calling and texting have been the most used functions since mobile phones first appeared on the market. A text message was preferred over a call because the text message was free from constraints of time and space in comparison with the call. However, a text message was limited to 80 bytes, and it cost some money to send text messages.
Then, mobile messenger apps, such as Kakaotalk, which have no limit to the number of characters for text messages and cost no money, appeared. For this reason, more people have started chatting with smart phones. Therefore, recently, we can easily find people who use the smart phones to communicate with each other without talking face-to-face although they are at the same place.
The dictionary definition of conversation is: ¡®A face-to-face talk between two or more people.¡¯ Why don't you talk to other people by putting your smart phone away? You will feel awkward at first. However, if you are patient for a while, you would have more fun than playing with the smart phone.
