[Desk Column] The Power Revealed by the ¡®Me Too Movement¡¯

Most people have had some experience of having power in large and small organizations. In a small aspect, if people have brothers and sisters, they make their little siblings do an errand, or in large aspect, a president giving orders can be seen as an example of power too. However, this form of power has fallen to being used as a tool for self-gratification rather than a reason for admiration. Victims of people who have taken advantage of their status by doing shameful behavior are no longer willing to be overshadowed. They soon came out of their shells as the ¡®Me Too Movement¡¯ in America, which then spread to South Korea.
In Korea, the movement became more widespread as incumbent prosecutor Seo Ji-hyeon appeared in the JTBC newsroom accusing another prosecutor of sexual violence. In politics, Ahn Hee-jeong, along with other experienced actors such as Lee Yoon-taek, Cho Min-ki, and Cho Jae-hyun have been tagged as assailants by the ¡®Me Too Movement¡¯. It was soon shown that they were using their accumulated power to commit violence against the weak and powerless.
I think this movement has arisen due to a power structure problem. It became popular to agree implicitly that the current power structure of the Republic of Korea is largely forced by a hierarchical order, so those under it had to unconditionally accept it. It could be seen in matters of sexual harassment, sexual violence, and corruption. The point I want to make is that the violence against the vulnerable was done by coercing. It is true that the movement has uncovered sex crimes by people who were abusing power, and this led to the prejudice of the powerful treating their subordinates like nothing. Park Geun-hye, a former president who took an advantage of her authority with corruption, was impeached last year.
I think the first thing we need to do is to deviate from the authoritarianism. Powerful people must remember that their powers are not there to abuse, but they are given positions that require faithfulness. Also, the process of obtaining power must be transparent. Sex crimes by power can be deterred by preventing attackers from abusing power or by creating an environment in which victims can act without fear. In order to solve corruption caused by power, we must first remove hereditary power. Otherwise, people who witnessed the abuse will get power through all kinds of flattery and eventually it will produce the same result. Although it is still premature, it is necessary for those in power to show behavior suitable for the position in the wake of the ¡®Me Too Movement¡¯. In addition, power should be given according to one¡¯s ability.
It is said that when a person has power and the mind can do anything, the most instinctive desire springs up first. Maybe that¡¯s why most of these abuse cases are related to sexual violence. In fact, I think that everybody already knows the solution to this problem. It is just hard to do so because society is too unfamiliar with such methods. I hope that the ¡®Me Too movement¡¯ will start gradually.
