People have different preferences, and they can express their individuality depending on what they prefer. The reason why individuality is important is that people can express both their appearance that they want to show to others and their potential tendency and ¡®introspection,¡¯ which is their true self. Individuality can not be found, but it appears according to attraction and preference for unknown reasons. This preference may lead to unconsciously evaluating or judging someone. The criteria for evaluation or judgment can be ¡®masculine¡¯ or ¡®feminine.¡¯ I can feel this when I made perfume for writing ¡®Find Your Scent¡¯ that is written on 3 page in this newspaper. A reporter named Kang Min-ji said, she prefers baby-powder scent, and I answered that I like lavender scent more than baby-powder scent. Then, I can feel directly people have different preferences seeing that we chose different scents and ratios and were satisfied. Besides the difference in scent preferences between Min-ji and me, I saw that more than half of the scents I thought were ¡®strange smells¡¯ were used when I tried them, and I realized that it was an illusion that others wouldn¡¯t prefer them just because I didn¡¯t.
Furthermore, I found out that I was unknowingly dividing the preference criteria into men and women while interviewing an owner Jeong Ye-jin, who runs ¡®Scent U.¡¯ During the interview, the owner told me an episode about a man. Listening the story, I asked, ¡°Do many men come to experience it alone?¡± She answered yes, and I responded, ¡°It¡¯s fascinating.¡± Now that I think about it, was stuck in the words ¡®masculine¡¯ and ¡®feminine¡¯ and thought too narrow.
Not only during this perfume workshop experience but also listening to the song titled TOMBOY, I thought that I was dividing someone¡¯s taste into ¡®masculine¡¯ and ¡®feminine.¡¯ Tomboy is a term for a woman who enjoys the activities of men and is described as a tomboy. When I was young, I thought that Tomboy children were too conspicuous. Girls who play soccer among boys and boys who work as handicraftsmen among girls all thought it was very unusual. However, now that I think about it, the children were not unusual, they just act according to their preferences. The song titled TOMBOY has the following lyrics. ¡°It¡¯s neither man nor woman. Just me loving Tomboy.¡± Looking at this lyric, I remembered myself distinguishing people as ¡®masculine/feminine.¡¯ Also, it occurred to me that I could also be a Tomboy to someone. Since I was young, I played with Lego blocks, toy knives, toy cars, and robots more than dolls, and I was very ashamed to wear dresses. Looking at me, my mother said that I was unique since I was young and that I grew up like a boy. I just chose what I liked, but I was considered a unique person, sharing my tendencies with ¡®masculine¡¯ or ¡®feminine.¡¯ In that way, I was evaluated according to my mother¡¯s standards, and based on a double standard, I divided others¡¯ tendencies into ¡®masculine¡¯ or ¡®femminine¡¯ standards. I think it was such a shameful value.
The word ¡®masculine/feminine¡¯ means ¡®the tendency commonly preferred by men/women,¡¯ which is a word created according to society and customs. Although this word is not the wrong word, I think it is wrong to unconsciously evaluate or judge a person according to this frame. I don¡¯t think people with different personalities than me are strange and unique, and I think acknowledging the difference can create a healthy society. Society is made up of various people who have many different tendencies, so society can be in harmony and peace by acknowledging differences. I want you to have an attitude of acknowledging the difference without recklessly judging others under the word ¡®masculine/feminine.¡¯ Moreover, I think you don¡¯t need to try to fit yourselves into the frame. Therefore, I hope that you don¡¯t hide your personalities to fit the word ¡®masculine/female¡¯ and freely spread your personalities.
