Proof Is Not Required in Love

Review of the Performance

People want to prove to themselves that their relationships are genuine, just like mathematicians want to find out if a theorem is true or false. Through this proof, people expect to stabilize their relationships and identify themselves. The name of the play that is introduced in this issue is 'Proof.' However, different from the name, nothing is proven even after the play ends. Ironically, this play deals with what can not be proven: the relationships between people.

Robert is an unfortunate mathematician who accomplished splendid work in the mathematics field when he was young but started to suffer from schizophrenia in his thirties. Catherine, who gets her mathematical talent from her father, Robert, interrupts her education and looks after him. After he passes away, Hal, a student of Robert's, visits Catherine. He puts his professor's affairs in order and falls in love with Catherine. She believes in him, so she shows her notes which contain a new mathematical discovery. However, he does not believe that she found a new proof because the discovery is so amazing. Based on this experience, Catherine loses her faith in people and becomes lonelier.

Before Catherine leaves, she says to Hal, ¡°You should have trusted me." As shown in her words, relationships are achieved not by proofs but by trust. Until December 12, this play will be performing in Artmadang 3 located on Seoul University Avenue. Aga Company, a promoting agency of this play, is providing specially priced tickets (15,000 won) to CBNU students with valid a student ID card.
