CBT surveyed the opinions of CBNU people about university students' volunteer activities.
Professor Choi Eun-young, the Department of Child Welfare The term 'Volunteer' comes from the Latin word 'voluntas' which means voluntary, autonomy and free will, and it is a typical activity which happens in the voluntary sector in modern society. Volunteers play their roles in the democratic processes of volunteer activities which they choose, and they contribute to realization of public interest. In addition, one of the major functions of a university is community service, giving what they learned and being part of the community development. Considering this function, it is important that students contribute to social justice and common good as well as develop senses of responsibility and civic consciousness through volunteer work during their university lives. Some students lose their autonomy for volunteer activity because they regard volunteer work as a way to build their career, but it is still a valuable experience where students meet other people in society, communicate with them and develop citizen awareness.
Nam In-mo, Department of Political Science and Diplomacy I do volunteer service to show my appreciation to society. I've been consoled by people that helped me a lot. I'd like to help others who are suffering when I have enough time for it. I¡®m sure that volunteer service is great. However, if somebody does it without knowing exactly what 'volunteer' means, it's meaningless. There should be a pure and sincere truth in your mind for helping others. Then, they also can be thankful to you.
Son Min-a, Department of Food Engineering I think that volunteer service by students is not as beneficial as it seems. Because almost every student is just in need of receiving volunteer work points for SPEC(abbreviation for 'Specification'), which is a new coinage for job candidates. In a competitive society, we do volunteer work mimetically so it's not genuine. Since there's no opportunity for children to realize what genuine volunteer service is, I truly hope more opportunities will be given to them.
