The Relative Evaluation System Starts This Semester
Á¦ 122 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2011.03.01

Kim Gwi-lyong, the dean of Academic Affairs, was explaining about the introduction of the new  education system.

The rules on retaking the same courses and leaves of absence(LOA) from school have changed. The relative evaluation system in majors, the academic warning system and the repetition system for failed students have becomen effective. The school held two briefing sessions to explain and answer students¡¯ questions about changed policies in the new students¡¯ union on Feb 11th and 18th.
Currently, the biggest issue is about the relative evaluation in majors which is going to begin this semester. Only Liberal Arts and majors of the College of Business Administration and the College of Engineering were graded on a curve. However, all subjects, except for subjects for particular purposes, in CBNU are going to conform to this rule. The physically disabled, foreigners, and students who were admitted into school with a special consideration are excluded.
The grade point average(GPA) of Liberal Arts will be changed from 2.8 ¡¾ 0.2 to 3.0 ¡¾ 0.3 and the GPA of majors is 3.0 ¡¾ 0.3.
Kim Gwi-lyong, the dean of Academic Affairs, said ¡°¡¯CBNU have a relative evaluation system for all subjects¡¯ will be marked on transcripts starting this academic year.¡± According to data which he quoted, the percentage of A and A+ of majors was 71.9%, Liberal Arts was 44.3% and the teaching education was 24.2%. He emphasized the data and said, ¡°It is abnormal. We should stop infl ating students¡¯ grades. Therefore, it should be remedied by introducing the relative evaluation.¡±
The rule on the leave of absence(LOA) system will be also changed. Students were easily allowed to take a leave of absence when they applied at the General Service Center. But this year, if students want a leave of absence, they must get permission through an interview with a dean. Also, if students have a GPA under 1.60 for one year, they will be held back. The Veterinary Medicine, the Pharmacy, the Manufacturing Pharmacy and the Department of Medicine are excluded. When you are held back, you must listen to a special lecture on how to study in the Center for Teaching and Learning. If students don¡¯t listen to the class, their registration for courses will be limited. The same is true when students receive an academic warning. It only applies to classes starting from 2011.
From 2012, a new rule on retaking the same courses will be implemented. Until last year, regardless of the grades which students received the previous semester, students could get the maximum A+ grade by retaking the class. However, from this year, only students who received lower than a C+ can retake the class and the maximum grade which students can receive is limited to a B+.
Oh Byeong-woo, a student from the Department of Korean Language and Literature '08, said, ¡°If CBNU had a plan to change some school regulations, the school should have asked the students about their plan. Universities need to respect students¡¯ opinions. Students are their customers. Universities should announce the changes before implementing it and consider all negative effects that the changes will cause. The school must take a measure for the problems to reach an agreement.¡±
The General Students¡¯ Association, which is criticized for their attitude of persisting in denying all knowledge of it, said, ¡°When we heard this news, we took an attitude of opposition. We

proposed an amendment in the first petition committee. If it is not accepted, the students¢¥
associations and chiefs of the independent student bodies will oppose the decision.¡±
Many parts of the management system of education have changed.

The General Student Association is still criticizing for the sudden introduction of relative evaluation system in majors. The students¡¯ resistance is expected to come.
