On August 26th, CBNU decided to hold the 2011 tuition review board. The board will be held in September, and it aims to make school finances transparent, to expand the scholarships and to provide a forum for discussion between the school and students.
The review board is an organization that will consider whether the amount of registration fees are properly decided or not. The board consists of 3 student representatives, 3 school representatives, parents of students, a legal expert and a chairman. In the review board, the information on tuition use which GSA has demanded will be disclosed.
Choi Won-mi, the president of GSA, called for this board meeting, "The board is so significant in that the school and students will have a chance to debate. If the school lets students know about its budgets and spending, students can know exactly where their tuition fees go."
The head office said, "Many students are curious about tuition use. In the meeting, CBNU is going to provide the information which the students and GSA demanded to know, and there will be detailed explanations about any questions."
GSA has demanded many times since July to hold a board meeting which, GSA hopes, can reveal the budget and expenditures and possibly reduce the tuition fees. The school refused, however, so the president of GSA shaved her hair as a sign of protest and started a movement on August 22nd to reject paying for the tuition fees. The president of GSA said, "CBNU got level H, which is the lowest level, in the evaluation among national universities. According to the inspection of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology(MEST), the percentage of money CBNU uses for personnel expenses out of the school supporting association budget is the highest among other national universities. This could mean the basis which shows that the school calculated more tuition fees than needed and that they could be reduced."
An officer of the head office expressed the following opinion, "One of the local daily newspapers reported that the reasons for getting level H the relatively high spending on payment for the faculty and staff members and underinvestment for facilities. However CBNU didn't receive the exact reasons from MEST why the school was evaluated as the level H."
