Campus police are patrolling the CBNU campus.
Many students drink alcohol together many times on campus because Chungbuk National University has a wide campus with lots of grass. However, this action, called ¡®green hof¡¯ among CBNU students, is restrained by the campus police. The Campus police started in 2008 and is composed of 3 teams that have 5 students. They walk around campus to make a healthy academic atmosphere. The student council, club alliances, other organizations and every college compose a team of the campus police, and they work 4 hours a day from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday through Friday. The 3 teams contact each other to avoid overlapping of locations.
The campus police protect students and crack down on interrupting sounds like drinking alcohol or singing loudly on campus. Also, they seek out damaged university facilities.
First, the psychological awareness that comes from the action of patrolling is one of the effects of campus police. After starting the patrol, robbery, theft and three other brutal crimes decreased by more than 20% in the Seoul Yeongdeungpo police district in 2013. CBNU can expect this effect by adopting campus police.
Second, it is a merit that students who know the campus well plan the routes. The places that the private patrol company might miss could be caught by campus police students.
Third, the effect of decreasing garbage caused by controlling drinking is considerable. Lee Jong-hui, who works for the Department of Student Affairs in the university headquarters, said ¡°There was a lot of garbage that students threw away after drinking on campus in 2007 when CBNU had not yet adopted campus police. It is difficult to clean the campus before 9 a.m. even if the janitors start working at 8 a.m.¡±
Fourth, students participating in the safety of the university by themselves are important. As participating in university safety is easy to pass or forget, it helps to remind the students.
On the other hand, this merit that students participate themselves is also a weakness. Campus police students don¡¯t have actual power to restrain students. A student who participated in the campus police said, ¡°Formerly, some male students asked us to drink together even though we warned them to stop drinking. That day, we were all women and they insisted and said, ¡®When you entered into university, what was your major.¡¯ Finally, the situation was resolved after reaching the person in charge.¡±
The second demerit of campus police is the campus police¡¯s system that entrusts work schedules and break times to students. While they can plan flexibly the schedule of that day, faithless students can work carelessly.
A third weakness is that campus police finish at 11 p.m. However, many accidents happen at night when campus police don¡¯t patrol. In this case, we can be worried about the campus police¡¯s practical effect.
A fourth demerit is that campus police students¡¯ safety is a concern. They can be exposed to danger when they have to be involved in an incident. CBNU campus police students receive a vest, a luminous stick and a radio, but there is nothing to protect themselves.
A student who participated in campus police said, ¡°When students doing green hof were discovered in Solmot pond, some students moved to another place like a grassy area that is behind the College of Humanities and kept partying. In this case, we have to patrol again and again. This thing makes it difficult.¡± She said about the opinion that campus police didn¡¯t seem to be working hard, ¡°We should have break times because we should patrol for 4 hours. It may not look like we work hard if other teams¡¯ break times are also witnessed.¡±
The campus police¡¯s purpose is good. However, it is difficult to expect practical effects. Nevertheless, the fact that the dirty campus has become clean after adopting campus police shows that it has actual effects. Then, it should improve if we increase the more positive effects by making up for the weak points.
