The Variety of Programs Provided by the CBNU Office of International Services(OIS)
Á¦ 166 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2016.09.01

The CBNU OIS, which aims to build a linguistic education support system that meets global standards, provides students, faculties, and local residents with a variety of language programs. However, according to statistical data about the CBNU OIS, the percentage of utilization of students is only 2.5%, and only 36.6% of 774 foreigners and overseas Koreans have utilized Korean Language classes.
The CBNU OIS is divided into 3 departments: Foreign Language Education, Korean Education, and International Exchange Services. The Foreign Language Education Department provides our students and local residents with a graded English conversation class, a writing class, an English conversation immersion class during vacation, and one-to-one or one-to-many personalized English education programs to nurture smooth English communication ability. Furthermore, they provide mock TOEIC, TOEIC Speaking, and TOEFL tests to help them assess their grade to prepare for the regular exam. The Korean Education Department provides foreigners and overseas Koreans who require Korean language ability to study in Korea or to find a job back in their country. In Korean Education, there are two different courses: the regular course and the special course. The International Exchange Services Department helps foreign students gain admission to Korean universities, manages daily and academic affairs, and operates an overseas language training program, a student exchange program and an overseas volunteering program. Recently, the OIS of CBNU added programs, such as a daily 3-hour TOEFL class for students who want to study in U.S. universities, and a Chinese class. For the students with financial burdens, the International Exchange Services Department awards scholarships. Also, at the English Clinic Center, they provide talking programs with a foreign exchange student and a free 30-minute session with a native-speaking instructor one-to-one to help nurture the ability of English speaking.
However, according to a survey our university provided, students say that there are a lot of students who don¡¯t know about the OIS programs. In fact, CBT asked 121 CBNU students randomly and only 24% of students answered that they know about the OIS programs well.

On the one hand, according to the statistics by the OIS of CBNU, the satisfaction of students who joined the programs at OIS was pretty high at 85%, but some students desire some development of the programs. A CBNU student, Jang Hyeon-jeong (¡¯15, Dept. of Plant Medicine), who actually took a class, said, ¡°During the semester, I didn¡¯t have much time to take foreign classes because of major classes, and the TOEIC class wasn¡¯t right for me. In the case of TOEIC, the academy manages it more systematically than the school, and there is no difference in price between the school and the academy. Therefore, I don¡¯t prefer the school programs.¡± A CBNU student, Chae Ji-hui(¡¯12, Dept. of French Language and Literature), who took a free English class, said, ¡° Unfortunately, the participation rate is really low as students around me rarely know about the free native English classes, and only two students applied for the student exchange program at the same university as me, and only 5 students attended the English conversation class during vacation. On the other hand, in the case of TOEIC, the class in the academy is more reliable than the school¡¯s and the price has no difference, and the academy is even cheaper when it holds a promotion.¡±
The opinion of students who answered, ¡°There is a lack of information about lectures and quality of lessons, so it¡¯s hard to take classes.¡± was superior as it took 76% of the survey mentioned above. It is expected that more students will be helped through programs if the OIS promotes effectively. According to the survey mentioned above, the students who have an intention to utilize the programs of the OIS is 69.8 percent, and the satisfaction of students who joined the programs is 80 percent.
From this feedback, a CBNU OIS employee said, ¡°The information about the lectures is on the OIS webpage, the school webpage and banners.¡± However, many students cannot get the information because they rarely know about it. Therefore, it needs the students¡¯ attention, and it also needs the OIS¡¯ additional effort in advertising to help many students get information more easily.
