CBNU conducted many programs that supported activities for students during the summer vacation in 2016. Major programs included the Global Humanities Finder Project and being a teaching assistant at the English camp.
The Global Humanities Finder Project was hosted by the CORE Corporation, a part of the Humanities Department at CBNU, to help the students find humanistic value in the humanities, to explore their careers and humanities integration, and to strengthen practical capacity through activities in international industries, institutions and organizations.
16 teams were selected in the primary document review process. Assessment of the objectives, topics, schedule visits and budgets were the contents that were reviewed. The final 8 teams were selected through the second interview. The selected teams carried out the projects for 4 nights and 5 days from July 15th to August 31st.
One of the selected teams, Archivist Dream Team, participated in the Global Humanities Finder Project to carry out activities with the topic ¡®The role of a researcher and the value of memorial records of tragedies¡¯. Archivist Dream Team witnessed the citizen¡¯s memorial documents from the tragedies that occurred in the past two years like the Sewol Ferry case and the Gangnam Karaoke murder. They discovered a problem that the records were vanishing instead of being preserved. Archivist Dream Team went to the United States to learn from a local archivist who has thoroughly collected records of the memorial tributes, such as the September 11th attack and the Boston terror attack; and to learn the value and beliefs of local US citizens. The team¡¯s final goal was to come back to Korea and spread awareness and share what they learned.
Archivist Dream Team¡¯s representative, Lee Sang-won(¡¯12, Dept. of English Language and Literature), said, ¡°I think humanities is the wisdom that frees ourselves so that we can choose our own happiness. Recorded tributes are an example of my team¡¯s values. My team wants to preserve the value of the post-its from the Sewol Ferry and Gangnam incidents, and we are walking on the other side of the street from money. Because of money, people are not able to see the sadness, anger, family, or the value of women¡¯s rights and lives. Humanistic values can¡¯t be graded by money but can make one¡¯s life richer and better by developing the values and beliefs in life.¡±
The International Affairs Division of CBNU has started an English teacher program at the Boeun County Elementary and Middle School English camp.
This program is for college students and graduate school students who are interested in English education, and it will provide quality educational services to elementary and middle school students with native English teachers so that they can improve their English skills as well. This program runs for about two weeks from July till August, and scholarships were provided for the assistant teachers. The main activities are pop song festivals, science experiments and cooking classes. Science experiments included creating luminous LED light bulb necklaces and seashell cell-phone rings, and cooking activities included making canapes.
An English camp assistant teacher, Yoon Ji-hyeon(¡¯14, Dept. of Mathematics), who participated in the pop music festival while working as an assistant teacher at the English camp, said, ¡°For the two weeks preparing for the festival, I got to meet lots of new students and make friends. At first, nobody wanted to participate; but, over time, everyone got more involved and became more passionate about the things they did. In addition, when the students presented better on stage than in rehearsal, everyone was delighted.¡±
If you participate in the summer programs supported by CBNU, you can earn money and meet lots of people. A manager for the Office of International Service, Kim Seong-yoon, said, ¡°There will be a variety of programs coming up during the winter vacation. I hope a lot of students will participate.¡±
