[Campus People] If You Want to Learn Coding, Learn in Like-Lion Club

Coding is another word for computer programming or making programs in computer languages such as C language, Java, or Python. In the fourth industrial revolution, computer programming is now emerging as an essential capability, not an option. In the time of a coding boom, CBNU students can easily learn how to code by joining Like-Lion at CBNU. On September 25th, the Like-Lion members held a coding class at CBNU and promoted their club. In this issue, CBT interviewed Noh Ki-jin (Dept. of Management Information Systems) and Cho Min-myung (Dept. of Data Science).

1. What kind of club is Like-Lion?

Like-Lion is a programming education organization, which was founded by programmer Lee Doo-hee in 2013, and the name refers to living like a lion, the king of animals. The club is operated in many universities across the country. The club has been operated as a non-profit educational organization for seven years, and it started at our university in 2016. We teach coding to anyone, regardless of their majors, and help them to develop computer skills. However, t is also possible to sign up just as a hobby.

2. What are the conditions of joining?

Students can apply to our club without any knowledge of coding, and students who are familiar with coding can also join, but the club¡¯s priority is for students who don¡¯t major in programming. Outsiders, as well as students, can join because it isn¡¯t affiliated with the school. Last year, people who weren¡¯t CBNU students also joined because our club is the only coding club in Cheong-ju. We choose members based on resumes and interviews. The applicants¡¯ majors don¡¯t matter. We only consider whether applicants have a passion and interest in coding. We just ask about some coding words and what kind of homepage they want to make. Even if they can¡¯t do the coding properly, we assess whether they will be able to process the coding in detail. The entry fee is 50,000 won, and the fees are used to operate the central office and provide online accessibility. We haven¡¯t yet decided yet on the 8th recruitment period, but we usually recruit from the end of February to early March.

3. How is the club doing?

The chiefs have to receive education and teach the students. Also, the chiefs have to give a lecture once a week on Monday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The normal members have to submit homework after the lectures. Once a year, Hackathon, a national contest, is held for 1 night and 2 days. The Hackathon is a combination of the words ¡®hacking¡¯ and ¡®marathon¡¯. It is a good chance for the club members to widen their knowledge of coding because it is a huge contest that gathers about a thousand people. Also, we now have a chance to attend the Ideathon. The top 20 teams can advance to the final contest, which Google holds for universities, and we entered it last year. Anyone who is going to enter our club can earn substantial experience.

4. What are the benefits of Like-Lion?

Experience gained in the club can be helpful in job interviews as it is a well-known club in the IT field. Recently, internship programs for three to six months have sprung up at startup companies that started out in Like-Lion. It would be helpful for those interested in coding to get a job. Another advantage is the large-scale competitions, such as Hackathon and Idea Tone, where only club members can participate.

5. Lastly, is there anything you want to say to your classmates at Chungbuk National University?

An affiliated service created by Like-Lion at CBNU is Yumyum, which is a mobile app service. We would like to strongly recommend it because there is a lot of information about the restaurants near CBNU, which could be useful when looking for places to eat. The benefit of this service is that, if the registered information changes, we revise it after getting feedback from classmates. We hope you will also use the Menu Alimi, which informs students about dormitory menus. We are going to select the 8th management team members soon, so we ask for lots of attention and participation.
