There is a difficult time that is unavoidable for college students. It is the exam period. During the mid-term exams, a CBT reporter became curious about what students in other departments were thinking. Therefore, the CBT reporter met 8 students from different departments to share some thought around the topic.
Q1. What do you want to do most after the mid-term exam?
Kim Ji-hoon(School of Electrical Engineering, 19): Rather than relaxing, I want to prepare for the remaining final exams. Regrettably, as much as I tried last semester, I did not get good grades, so I want to do my best in all the subjects I am currently taking. Some of the professors have already been covering work from the final exam range, and I feel like I am already behind. So, I want to study for the final exams right after the mid-term exams are over.
Koh Yoon-seo(School of Business, 17): I like to exercise so, I go to the school sports center. I can not go much right now because of studying for the exam. After the mid-term exam, I want to go to the sports center every day to work out. I have some basic exercise equipment in my room, but I definitely feel more energized when I go to the gym and work out with people.
Q2. What is your attitude towards the test?
Seong Yun-mo(Dept. of Intelligent Systems and Robotics, 22): I thought that the sophomore and freshman years were not very different, but as I went up to the sophomore year and prepared for the exam, I realized that I was completely wrong. In the first year, there were more liberal arts subjects than majors, and it was easy to study because the major subjects were not very different from what I learned in high school. So, rather than taking the test lightly like last year, I am taking the test seriously this year.
Q3. What is your own unique way to prepare for the exam?
Hong Ji-won(Dept. of English Education, 19): I tend to memorize the bulk of the work. In the Dept. of English Education, tests are more objective than narrative. Therefore, even if I do not fully understand it, when I memorize it, I remember it. I think memorization rather than understanding is more efficient in especially when it comes to multiple choice tests.
Kim Ji-hoon(School of Electrical Engineering, 19): I think every single lecture is important, and it is paramount to be present in class. If you miss a single class, there will be negative consequences, and even if you try to catch up it will not be as efficient. I tend to focus on what the professor emphasized in class and the specific problems that he solved. Attending classes, taking notes, and reviewing as soon as possible on the same day is the best way for me.
Cho In-ho(Dept. of Information and Statistics, 21): My study method is to close the book and read again later if I do not understand. Even if you do not understand it at first, there are many cases where you can understand later by repeating it as many times as possible. Rather than understanding and memorizing in one go, I tend to learn through repetition. Also, I tend to understand concepts while solving problems. It is because when I look at the concept itself, I do not understand what it means, but when I solve the problem, I can see how this concept is used and applied.
Q4. What was the hardest thing about the exam period?
Seo Dong-woo(School of Electronics Engineering, 19): I have the hardest time coping with the psychological pressure during the exam period. Even when I am studying, I feel some pressure. However, when I am resting, I feel more pressure. I have to sleep for 8 hours or more to get rid of fatigue. However, it is quite difficult because I have no choice but to cut down on sleep during the exam period.
Park Gyeong-woong(School of Civil Engineering, 19): Even though I studied hard, I tend to be mentally shaken when the practice questions do not go well. Especially, when the test is just around the corner. Also, during the test period, I have to reduce the break time to increase the study time. However, it is very difficult.
Q5. How can you relieve stress during exam period?
Jung Dong-wook(Dept. of Wood and Paper Science, 18): I study during the day and go out at dawn to get some fresh night air. I like the free feeling of being alone on the open road at night when there are not many people around. I tend to go to quiet places where there are no people. Also, I relieve my stress by watching the news during the exam period. I like watching the news, but I am especially attracted to it during the exam period. I think everything other than studying seems to be fun.
Kim Ji-hoon(School of Electrical Engineering, 19): I relieve stress by eating late-night snacks. I do not have a set time for late-night snacking, and I eat it when I am angry because a problem is not solved. My soul food during the exam period is cup noodles. If I eat too fancy food, I do not want to study. Therefore, I change my mood by eating cup noodles in a light and simple way.
Hong Ji-won(Dept. of English Education, 19): I go to a karaoke room and sing 6-7 songs in 30 minutes or less, and my stress is relieved. I usually go alone during the exam period because I spend more than an hour when I go with a friend.
