What Do You Think about Being Given a Wrong Decision in the Olympics?
Á¦ 134 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2012.08.31

The City of London hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics on July 28th. It was conducted in the full glare of the world. However, many athletes were given wrong decisions in this Olympics.
There were three terrible wrong decisions for Korean athletes in the Olympics. First, Park Tae-hwan was given a wrong decision for beating the gun in the preliminaries of the men¡¯s 400m freestyle although he won the race. However, he formally sued Federation International De Nation for this and he won the case. Second, Jo Joon-ho won the game by the judges' decision against Ebinuma Masashi in the quarterfinals of the men's 66-kilogram class of judo. However, the result suddenly reversed under the intervention of the chief judge. He lost the game 0-3. Last, Shin A-lam lost an epee semi-final. She had the advantage in the extra game. If one second had passed, she could have won the game. However, Heidemann attacked three times in only one second and she succeeded in the 4th punto. As a result, Shin A-lam lost.
The wrong decision of Shin A-lam especially became one of the five wrong decisions in the Olympics. The judge agreed with the one second passing but didn't reverse her decision. People in the Olympics must have sportsmanship, but some don't have that. One reversed one's decision, and another didn't, despite the obvious wrong decision.
A judge is a person, so he can't precisely judge everyone. However, he must remember this. In the opening ceremony, he said, "I declare this on behalf of all judges and executive teams of the games participating in the Olympic Games. We fairly obey and respect all rules and demonstrate good sportsmanship."

Q&A
What do you think about the wrong decisions in the Olympics?
-Why does a judge make the wrong choice?
Lee In-bok(Korea) : I think a judge knows a wrong decision because he has experiences in many games. This means that he has the capability of fairly judging the game. However, he sometimes gives athletes the wrong decision. As a result, he may have accepted a bribe.

Zachary(USA) : Well, the Olympics has many events in which many nations and many athletes from each nation compete. As the article states, judges are human and therefore make mistakes. Considering the number of events, I'm surprised there weren't more mistakes.
Joko Santoso, S.Pd(Indonesia) : There are many wrong decisions of judges. It is unavoidable. They are people and I think they lack experience.

-How can we solve a wrong decision?
Lee In-bok(Korea) : Various experts must publicly judge whether the decision is wrong and right. Judges may accept bribes so only they judge that. If various judges publicly judge the decision, this has more objectivity. On this being public, they can't trick or seduce people into thinking the wrong decision is right.

Zachary(USA) : The only way to reduce the number of mistakes is to rely more on technology in order to make close decisions. As the article states, the south Korean swimmer was judged wrongly, but because of replay technology, he was able to repeal the decision.
Joko Santoso, S.Pd (Indonesia) : I think the present procedures on the wrong decisions are fine. The most recent procedure is video decipher of video. In reality, Park Tae-hwan used this in this Olympics and he formally sued Federation International De Nation for this and he won the case. Therefore, if they followed procedures on the wrong decisions in the Olympics, athletes could perform much better in their games.
