I like people who are honest about their pain. Most people aren¡¯t honest about their pain and are afraid to express their pain. However, I think someone who is honest about their pain has the ability to understand others. ¡®The Wounded Healer¡¯, written by Henri Nouwen, said, ¡°We are apt to think that we can help others only if we are strong and perfect.¡± In the book, he emphasized, ¡°What wounded people really need are the wounded healers in this age.¡±
There is a story that shows this well. It is a well-known story because it was reported on Twitter. There was a man who was a high managing director for Samsung, and his son suffered from school violence. Sometimes, his son got injuries and his glasses were broken, but he had no idea that his son suffered from the school violence. In the end, his son committed suicide after he said, ¡°Square your shoulders,¡± to his son. The students¡¯ parents and school kept silent, so he was angry. Therefore, he submitted his resignation and founded the Foundation for Preventing Youth Violence in 1995. This NGO was the first Korean NGO about preventing school violence. His name is Kim Jong-gi. This story shows that wounded people can heal other people better than strong and perfect people.
Most friends of mine say that I am a good listener when they talk about their worries to me. I was treated as an outcast and I was wounded before, so I think that helped me become a good listener about people¡¯s worries. Yet, my emotional wounds were not healed, so I became a person capable of understanding other people¡¯s emotional wounds. I don¡¯t want people to hide their pain, and I want people to know the pain can be understood by other people.
