Last September 15th, Mark Zuckerberg, who is the CEO of Facebook, said that he is examining adding buttons that can show diverse emotions other than the ¡®like¡¯ button on Facebook. He has continuously received requests of adding a ¡®dislike¡¯ button since 2009, but because a ¡®dislike¡¯ button has the possibility to create hostility among people, he refused it. Instead of a ¡®dislike¡¯ button, he is planning to add buttons that can show various emotions.
When Zuckerberg announced that he is planning to make other buttons, people thought it would be a ¡®dislike¡¯ button. They worried because it would have the opposite meaning of the ¡®like¡¯ button on Facebook. However, Zuckerberg made the correction a few days ago. He said, ¡°We didn¡¯t want to just build a ¡®dislike¡¯ button because we don¡¯t want to turn Facebook into a forum where people are voting up or down on people¡¯s posts. That doesn¡¯t seem like the kind of community we want to create.¡±
Until now, when there was only a ¡®like¡¯ button, there were some side effects. As the ¡®like¡¯ button has become recognized as influential, the so-called ¡®like addicts¡¯ are increasing. They write fake posts or upload disgusting videos, like eating noodles from the toilet, to get more ¡®likes¡¯ from people. Moreover, companies that fabricate the number of ¡®likes¡¯ have appeared.
People can only press the ¡®like¡¯ button or write comments in posts to express their emotions now. However, if diverse kinds of emotion buttons appear, there will be more selection to express people¡¯s emotions. In negative posts, which have stories about crime or death, people could press other emotion buttons instead of the ¡®like¡¯ button and share a more honest emotion with others.
If diverse emotion buttons appear on Facebook, people can express more honest emotions than before. By making diverse emotion buttons which have positive meanings, such as a ¡®pity¡¯ or ¡®cheer up¡¯ button, people can still express their various feelings without expressing negative sentiments to each other. If so, won¡¯t Facebook be a place for communication where diverse emotions are shared?
