[Reporter¡¯s View] Mental Illnesses Should Be Treated

Recently, I suffered from insomnia without any reason, which resulted in depression. On the previous Monday, I went to bed at around 12 a.m. as usual. However, I couldn¡¯t fall asleep and tossed and turned all night. I fell asleep in the end, but I just got 3 hours of sleep. I was so tired that I couldn¡¯t focus in class. The serious problem was that situation kept happening for a week, which totally exhausted me.
Whenever I have some problems, I usually meet people who are close to me and have a conversation with them. At that time, I decided to meet my pastor, whom I really respect. He said, ¡°I think there must be some reasons why you have gone through a hard time, so after taking some time to figure out what the problem is, just try to put it behind you. I believe you can overcome this bad situation!¡± Surprisingly, while I was talking with him, I came to realize that there was some psychological pressure on my mind. Fortunately, my condition got better after meeting him.
Each person has their own ways of solving their problems: listening to music, working out, painting pictures, etc. However, sometimes they cannot solve their problems by themselves. In those cases, they need to see a doctor and get medical treatment. Even though many people are aware of it, they don¡¯t act, especially when they suffer from mental illnesses because of misconceptions and prejudices about it. As a result, they just neglect the problem.
In the case of other countries, many people meet a counselor and receive some advice on a regular basis as they have regular health checks and know that it is the right thing to do for their mental health. Although many Korean people also have changed a lot in terms of their attitudes towards people who suffer from mental illness and who go to a psychiatric hospital, there are still some people who avoid them.
As our physical condition isn¡¯t always healthy every day, our mental condition can also weaken. Therefore, we need to take care of our mental state regularly.
