[Editorial] What is FREEDOM in our SOCIETY?
Á¦ 169 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2016.12.05

I have been asking what is freedom from most of college level students. Actually the answer is very simple in one side but also very complicated in other side because we need to realize the difference between freedom and neglect or ignorance. So, in order to get an answer to that question, shall we just imagine that you are the only one in our society. Then, sort what you could do and what you should do. I guess that you may think you could do a lot of things you wished without any limitation. However, in case of Robinson Crusoeu who is very famous character in the English novel, he has just tried to make something to be ordered. Even though he was alone, he loved to make something like regulations. Generally speaking, we, man, always want to escape from society mixed with regulations that restrict our freedom. In the meanwhile, how come he just tried to rule something around him and to be restricted by what he made as regulations? The answer is very simple. You cannot live alone and you need and want to be a ¡°member¡± of  a ¡°society.¡± That is human who can not live without regulations and laws with others.
Here, we have two different regulations named State constitutional provision and statue address freedom of speech and civil cause of action for defamation. I am very sure that even if you are human who ought to make laws by instinct, you would have not made those kind laws when you are alone, which means those two regulations can exist in only a ¡°society.¡± In a society, what can you do or what should you do? Of course, you are free just like Jesus, Buddha, or any gods or saints in our world. But, just think about it. What Jesus or any of them did before? Plainly saying, did he do something bad for a society? Did he tried to make a society worse? I am not going to answer to those questions since I could not find something like those yet. Instead, I would like to tell you something that you are definitely, wholly and perfectly free when you have Good in your mind, since, at least, you would not bother anybody else in your society. Because of that you should do something good for a society and you are not free if you would try NOT to do something good for a society, or, at least, to other people who live with you in a society.
Then, what kind of Good things you should do to make your society better from the perspective of freedom? I think that you should spread your thought of Good to others. Sometimes, you can criticize others in order to extract better ideas and remove really bad influence on a society. While you are doing these activities, you are becoming to tell what is good and what is bad. At the end, in the above instant case of our real society, sometimes those two regulations might look very different. At first sight, Constitution allows us freedom, but Code restricts freedom. Thus, you might think code should follow the Constitution. Yes, you are quite right. However, I just suggest that you should think the values inside concerned, then, you could find out what you should do or what you should not do in our society, since those two looking different regulations might have basically same values for the society. Now, you can tell that freedom is right to choose to be free or not to be free since freedom has a contradiction in itself. So please choose Good with freedom as you should do for our brighter society.
