Divided Opinions; Should Building No. 4 Be Preserved or Demolished
Á¦ 118 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2010.08.30

Nowadays, Building No. 4, previously the cultural studies building, is vacant. It used to be utilized for lectures for cultural studies, but nobody uses it anymore. The school doesn't even have any plans regarding the use of that building.

Building No. 4 was completed in 1963, and it is the only existing building which was built before the present-day Chungbuk University complexes. Looking at Building No. 4, we can know the buildings' structures of that time and how the campus has been changed. Since Building No. 4 was completed, it has been utilized for lectures. However, the school didn't manage the facilities well even though a number of students had expressed their dissatisfaction. In 2010, the Humanities and Social Sciences Building(No.56) was built in front of the Department of Art, and the building is being utilized for lectures for cultural studies.

No one wants to use Building No. 4 for lectures and the building has become just temporary storage. The school hasn't discussed any plan for Building No. 4. The Department of Facilities Management officials said, "Opinions are divided as to whether the building should be demolished or be preserved, so it is difficult to make a specific plan."

Rye Hyo-yeol (Department of Chemical Engineering, '08) who has taken lectures in Building No. 4 said, "Building No. 4 has existed since CBNU's establishment. Therefore, I think it should be repaired and preserved." On the other hand, Park Jun-kyu (Department of School of Business, '07) said, "If the building is repaired, the cost would be high. I don't think that we need to repair the building just for use as a classroom."

Professor Lee Sang-hoon of the Department of Architecture said, "I agree that Building No. 4 has historical value to cherish, but it is not necessary to preserve it because the building was built poorly. Also, it is located near the old Student Union Building and the dormitory, which are both used by many students, so I think it should be repaired for other uses."

If Building No. 4 is left without any plan, it would be an eyesore. The school should take active measures on this matter as soon as possible.
