Who are the Student Fees for?

The rate of the fee payment in 2011 is just still 52%

The Office of Student Affairs of Chungbuk National University(CBNU) collects 10,000 won for student membership fees from students every semester. Groups representing CBNU students, such as 'The Plus', 'e-ß¾' and 'A Board of Representatives', have a share in and use the dues for public purposes. Including big events such as the CBNU festival, Sunrising Ceremony and opportunities to take TOEIC exams for free, all kinds of events have been implemented with the fees.
There is a clause in the GSA constitution, "CBNU students should pay student fees". However, many students have not paid their student fees because CBNU doesn't impose penalties against those students and doesn't invoke economic sanctions. Since 2009 the rate of the fee payment has steadily increased about 1% every year. However, the amount of the fees that students paid in 2011 was just 52%.

Jang You-jeong(Department of Political Science and International Relations 10') said, "I have paid my student fee because of responsibility, but I don't know whether I have benefited from the GSA as much as I paid. Most students may feel like I do. There are many students who have not paid their student fees. Is there any difference between students who have paid the fees and those who have not paid the fees? If students are not properly rewarded for paying the fees, it will be hard for students to continuously keep their voluntary attitude to observe the rules."

Student fees are expenses that GSA uses for CBNU students. Half of the students don't pay membership fees which are used for them. As the number of students who don't pay the fees increases, the benefits students can receive from GSA will be dropped.

GSA is an independent organization for students, and the members of GSA are elected by CBNU students. Therefore, the Head Office members don't want to force students to pay their student fees. GSA can impose sanctions against students, but before GSA does that, CBNU students should bear student fees with responsibility.

Lee Jong-hee, a staff member of the Office of Student Affairs said, "When GSA gathers students' opinions or proceeds with many events, CBNU students should actively participate in them. To live up to a rule, GSA also should well organize their budget and use the fees only for students' welfare." In addition, he said, "If GSA discloses the uses of the student fees, students will believe GSA and more actively participate in paying their fees."
