Do you know that Chungbuk National University celebrated its 70th anniversary this year? The university is conducting various commemoration events to mark the 70th anniversary of its foundation. However, it is difficult to visit the school due to COVID-19.
  A CBT reporter would like to deliver news on what events are being held and  in progress instead. First, let the reporter introduce the events that took place during 2020 and the first half of 2021.

The Emblem and Catchphrase Contest

  To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the University foundation, Chungbuk National University held an emblem and catchphrase contest to represent the university and an ceremony award for the winning work on December 8, 2020. The elected emblem and catchphrase “100 Years to Bloom into the World with Regional Roots” was released on January 1, 2021.

Creation of the 70th Anniversary Typeface



  To celebrate the 70th anniversary of its foundation in 2021, Chungbuk National University created a private typeface containing the history and vision of the  university and distribution free in January 2021. “Chungbuk National University 70th Anniversary Typeface” reflected the  identity by taking motifs from the symbol of the university, and it symbolizes growth of moving toward a global university through harmony and balance by breaking rigid structures.

Selection of a school tree and flower

  To celebrate the 70th anniversary of its opening in 2021, Chungbuk National University selected the zelkova tree and the flower of the Korean abelia tree as its official tree and flower. This tree was selected with the hope that students, members and alumni grow into outstanding people and the university develops for a long time like the zelkova tree which embraces many people by making a big shade. Like “All sadness will gone,” which is meaning of the Korean abelia tree, the CBT reporter hope that sadness disappears and joy blooms in front of students. In particular, this selection is more meaningful as it reflects the opinions of the members, students and alumni.

  The 70th anniversary events will be held intensively in the second half of the year. Various events are being prepared, including a creative contest, a time capsule project, a history museum renewal, an 8th debate contest and a 70-year history compilation project.
  Next, let’s listen to Kim Su-kab a President of Chungbuk National University, who is in charge of the commemorations.

Q1. First, how do you feel about celebrating the 70th anniversary of Chungbuk National University?

  Chungbuk National University took its first step on the ruins of the war in 1951 with the support of local residents who wanted to carve out the future with higher education, and started as Cheongju Agricultural Elementary University with the values of ‘Truth, Justice, and Development.’ This year is 70th anniversary of its foundation. Now we have to move forward to the next 100 years based on history of the university. Looking back on the past, there were many hard times, but all the members of the university have worked together to develop the university and the region. We are trying to leap from the center of the country to the global national center university. Based on the past 70 years, Chungbuk National University will open a new road of dynamism and right way.

Q2. You said you were going to produce a time capsule in this commemorative project. The CBT reporter would appreciate it if you could introduce the meaning of the message to future students.

  The 70th anniversary time capsule of Chungbuk National University means continuing our history and future to celebrate the 70th anniversary of our university’s foundation. It contains historical material and nonmaterial data for future schoolmates who will lead the university. The time capsule will be released on the 100th anniversary. Above all, to help people understand the past and present of the university in 30 years, we will envelope valuable items made by each department. We will also do masks with teachers’ committee signature. In addition, a total of 130 artifacts, including letters, videos, and records of faculty members, will be buried to capture the past and present moments of the university, which will serve as an opportunity to strengthen its commitment to the future 100 years.

Q3. Could you tell about the advantages and vision of Chungbuk National University?

  Now, we are given the mission and task of making a leap to become a global national center university, such as seeking qualitative maturity for “70 years as regional roots, 100 years to bloom the world” and pioneering the future in response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In the future, the university will strive to foster democratic citizens who lead in academic development, pursue a joint good faith, develop community culture, and seek sustainable development of human society together. Chungbuk National University is the national university in the new metropolitan area and has unlimited growth potential with four campuses linked to specialization. Taking these advantages, we have run to the top 10 universities in Korea and the top 100 in Asia under the vision of ‘the backbone of the country from the center of the country.’ Chungbuk National University ranked 96th overall in the World’s Universities with Real Impact (WURI), the world’s innovation university ranking. Based on this achievement, we will make a more powerful leap forward.
