For 4 weeks, from last Jan. 22nd to Feb. 18th, CBNU¡¯s volunteer team Hanrabong went to Nicaragua in Central America for educational volunteer work. Hanrabong, which consisted of 20 members and a leader, Han Jae-young (Professor of Dept of Chemistry Education), conducted educational activities for Nicaraguan students that comprised 10 subjects: math, physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, economy, Korean, English, culture, and IT. Let¡¯s hear from Prof. Han Jae-young.
 
A student who majors in computer engineering said, ¡°Since it is hard for me to study English during the semester, I usually make time for TOEIC studies when I am on vacation. I wish I had started to study English when I was in the lower grades in college. From taking English liberal arts to getting public English scores for a job, studying English is indispensable for university students.
 
The CBNU dormitories have changed the selection rule in 2017. From 2017, the dormitories are going to raise the ratio of freshmen residents to 60%. Besides undergraduates, 6% of residents are graduate students, 15% of residents are international students, and 8% are Korean trainees.
 
On January 2, 2017, CBNU students went abroad to do volunteer work. I heard some stories about three students who went to Vietnam to do volunteer work as a part of the program of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
 
In 2015, on the 27th of November, Chungjeonwanryo was re-elected as the student council. Chungjeonwanryo spoke of their aspirations that they will satisfy every single student. They strongly emphasized their major pledges such as the 112 Campaign, where one council member meets 2 students per a day to communicate, and A+ Improvement, which expands the number of students who can earn an A+, even though it received the most complaints.
 
The students of the Dept. of Physical Education have achieved good results in the recent competitions. In particular, their achievements in the 97th National Sports Festival in Asan were remarkable. 35 CBNU students took part in 5 different events and won medals: three gold medals(singles and doubles soft tennis and 71kg class of wrestling), one silver medal(55kg class of wrestling) and three bronze medals(doubles soft tennis, discus and 57kg class of wrestling).
 
The CBNU Disability Support Center has installed various facilities for handicapped students¡¯ convenience, and it is running a lot of programs to aid the handicapped. The Center installed a barrier-free room for handicapped students to take a rest between classes this semester. This room has been utilized as a lounge by the disabled students and a place for educating middle school and high school students about the disabled.
 
Dissatisfied comments about Pungmul (Korean traditional percussion) band¡¯s activities can be seen easily on CBNU-related SNS, such as ¡®CBNU Daeshin Jeonhaedripnida¡¯, ¡®CBNU Daenamoosoop¡¯ on Facebook or CBNU¡¯s Daum online cafe. Typical samples are, ¡®Samulnori(Korean traditional percussion quartet)¡¯s sounds are so annoying,¡¯ and ¡®Samulnori has returned right after Chuseok! The past few days were so nice and quiet.¡¯
 
There is a person who cleans up our school beyond our sight. Lee Sun-ja is a cleaning woman belonging to the College of Business. She told us the story of a CBNU cleaning woman¡¯s life. My name is Lee Sun-ja. I have worked for 5 years as a cleaning woman in the College of Business building (N14). The College of Business building consists of five floors. I clean up the third floor to the fifth floor, and the other custodian cleans up the first two floors.
 
The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) announced on August 30th that its Adhesion Contract Division inspected 17 national and private university dormitories¡¯ adhesion contracts and demanded them to rectify the unfair clauses. In the case of the CBNU Residence Halls, the clauses of no refund for mid-contract termination were pointed out by the KFTC, so the CBNU Residence Halls rectified the related clauses.
 
The OIS has selected Korean students who can meet their foreign buddies at least once a week and help them responsibly during the program. When selecting students, the OIS puts emphasis on applicants¡¯ English grades to help lower the language barriers between buddies. Korean buddies, who are selected after several steps, help their foreign buddies¡¯ individual activities, such as issuing their student IDs, and have to perform given tasks such as introducing school facilities.
 
There are many lost articles in CBNU, but there are not enough lost and found offices. Moreover, there is no united office in CBNU for managing lost articles. If someone finds lost articles, he or she is supposed to hand them to the management office in the main library or the student union building. Aside from those places, the finders should notify the CBNU homepage or the student community website.
 
There is an association of veterinary students consisting of 45 chapters. The South Korea chapter is one of the most active chapters among them and holds various events annually. Jang Hyeon-young(¡¯13, College of Veterinary Medicine) is the president of the South Korea chapter of this association. IVSA stands for International Veterinary Students¡¯ Association and was first established in the 1950s in Europe. Korea entered this association in 2007.
 
CBNU conducted many programs that supported activities for students during the summer vacation in 2016. Major programs included the Global Humanities Finder Project and being a teaching assistant at the English camp. The Global Humanities Finder Project was hosted by the CORE Corporation, a part of the Humanities Department at CBNU, to help the students find humanistic value in the humanities, to explore their careers and humanities integration, and to strengthen practical capacity through activities in international industries, institutions and organizations
 
The CBNU Consumer Cooperation (CBNU Co-op) proceeded with an environmental improvement project on the 3 school cafeterias for improving the welfare service and living conditions on campus. They tried to increase customer satisfaction by changing the parts that students and faculty felt were uncomfortable. During the past, the most uncomfortable things were that they wanted a comfortable atmosphere when they ate alone and that they wanted separate resting spaces and conference spaces.
 
The CBNU OIS, which aims to build a linguistic education support system that meets global standards, provides students, faculties, and local residents with a variety of language programs. However, according to statistical data about the CBNU OIS, the percentage of utilization of students is only 2.5%, and only 36.6% of 774 foreigners and overseas Koreans have utilized Korean Language classes
 
LG Global Challenger is the contest exhibition for 4-year-course college students or graduate students. Participants make teams of 4 members and choose a subject among humanity, society, science, or environment. Then they visit domestic and international regions to investigate their subject with the sponsorship of LG. Gool Luck, CBNU¡¯s LG Global Challenger team, has been the only successful team since 2009. We heard stories about the team and LG Global Challenger from Gool Luck.
 
Recently, complaints about the reformed grading system have skyrocketed from CBNU students. In fact, the first reformed grading system was released last year, and at that time, CBNU Educational Affairs Department(EAD) just held a briefing on it. However, unlike last year, the public hearings on the second reformed grading system were held on April 27 and May 3.
 
The CBNU student council is receiving good publicity from students because they have performed their duties very well. The duties are about an election campaign pledge to increases the number of convenient facilities. The CBNU student council pledged to increase convenient facilities like a Nap Zone and a Recruiting Room. Students who feel tired or have some spare time between classes can sit back and relax in that place.
 
OCU started at Sungkyunkwan University and 12 other prominent universities in 1997. However, there are some problems arising among students nowadays. An OCU consortium is a consultative group that has academic exchanges with other universities via cyberspace. CBNU is also a member of the OCU consortium, and today, there are 19 national universities, including CBNU, and 29 private universities, including Chungang and Sungkyunkwan Universities, so 48 universities are members of the OCU consortium.
